Getting Started

Installation

Download Stratum and get a server running.

Stratum ships as a small launcher. You download the release for your platform, extract it, and run it. On the first start it prepares the matching vanilla server files for you.

Requirements

  • The .NET 10 runtime on the host. The launcher is framework dependent, so the runtime must be installed. Check it with dotnet --list-runtimes. The output should include Microsoft.NETCore.App 10.x.
  • The Stratum release that matches your server’s Vintage Story version.

Download

Each release has one zip per platform, named stratum-<version>-<platform>.zip:

PlatformFile
Windows x64stratum-<version>-win-x64.zip
Linux x64stratum-<version>-linux-x64.zip
Linux ARM64stratum-<version>-linux-arm64.zip

Get the zip for your platform from the releases page.

In the filename, <version> is the release tag without its leading v. For example, the tag v1.22.7-stratum.2 produces a filename such as stratum-1.22.7-stratum.2-linux-x64.zip.

Run

  1. Extract the zip wherever you want the server to live.
  2. Start the launcher.

On Windows:

StratumServer.exe

On Linux:

./StratumServer

On Linux, make the launcher executable after extracting it. The release archive stores it without the executable permission:

chmod +x StratumServer

The first run prepares the vanilla server build that matches the release, then starts the patched server. Preparation runs once. First launch describes the steps.

The first run needs outbound HTTPS access to Vintage Story’s version manifest and the download host listed there. Linux ARM64 also downloads a native overlay from the Vintage Story ARM64 server repository. The install directory must be writable by the account running Stratum because preparation writes the base files and patched server files there.

Data folder

Without --dataPath, the launcher uses a Data folder next to StratumServer and prints the path in its startup banner. The path is not printed when you pass --stratum-no-banner. Pass --dataPath <path> or --dataPath=<path> to choose another location. The launcher passes any flag it does not recognize to the server unchanged.
